it’s monday..and yes. today is a dreary monday. it’s raining in June. Boo. anyways, we were able to check out several new restaurants over the weekend, while it was still sunny 🙂
there’s this new casual eats place that opened recently a few blocks away called Garaje. i’ve past it a bunch of times, but hadn’t had a chance to check it out. Looking at the menus and all of the reviews on yelp, it looked really good! Miss P + I had been talking about going for a while, and last Friday we were able to go, with boys in tow.
The menu is mostly Mexican, with tacos and ‘Zapatos’ (a burrito), as well as burgers and salads. It did not disappoint! Not only was the food really well prepared and yummy, the prices were really reasonable, one $. woot! They could really increase them by a buck or two (but don’t tell them that! ha).
yes, SW & i are piggies and we got:
Drive Inn Burger – charbroiled 1/3 angus certified beef, double am cheese, griddled onions, pickles, tomatos, 1000 island dressing + fried egg — YUM
2 street tacos: crispy la palma torts, cilantro, cebollas y salsa
Thai Prawn taco: plancha grilled giant gulf prawns, fiery Thai vin, salty peanuts, cilantro, cabbage, lime mayo, la palma corn torts => loaded with prawns!
a side of Jose Wong salad in a Chinese take out box => how could i not order this with a name like that? haha it was basically a Chinese Chicken salad with tortilla chips in it. Really good, with a slightly sweet dressing. the tortilla chips were nice and crunchy.
the big hit for me..and now I want to eat another one (like right now) was the
Cali Steak Zapato – skirt steak asada, jack cheese, fries, avocado, pico de gallo, flour tortilla
mmmm………soooo good. the fries made it that much better hehe and I normally am not big on burritos..
their sangria was also super delicious..probably not much wine, but it sure was yummy too! I could probably drink a pitcher lol
I can see why this place gets such great reviews.
Another check off of the ‘to try’ list was Kitchen Mojo. I had high hopes for this place but the food was just okay…although the lady that was working there, presumably one of the owners, was SUPER nice. I’d give it one more try, maybe I wasn’t feeling the food as much due to the heavy dinner the night before..
We got the: Loco Moco (of course!) + the Spicy Pork Scramble
the loco moco had a curry sauce instead of the usual sauce, and they ran out of burger patties, so SW had to settle for Portuguese sausage + a side of kimchi
i got the spicy pork scramble which was Korean spicy pork, onions, scrambled eggs over rice. it was good, but I think I was a little overwhelmed by the amount of food when they put the plate down. I guess it’s a good value?
We wanted to watch the new Superman movie, ‘Man of Steel’ at Kabuki Theaters, so we grabbed dinner next door at this new Hawaiian lounge and restaurant:
i wonder if it was because SW wasn’t satisfied with his loco moco from lunch? It was a fairly large sized lounge and restaurant, and they had a live band that night playing jazz music which made it more fun and entertaining. the age range was early 20’s all the way up to people with full heads of gray hair. the decor was a blast to the past–maybe the 90’s or early 2000’s? it was an interesting place, to say the least. it felt like we were someplace else hah
Loco Moco & Hamachi Poke
Spam Musubi, & Babyback ribs
the food overall wasn’t bad..musubi, poke and chicken wings are the highlights for me.
